Anne Banders' Advice -- Too Much TV?
[A]
Dear Anne,

My husband and I are happily married. But there is one thing that we fight about all the time, and it's becoming a serious problem.

My husband "Mark" loves to watch television, and I don't. As a child, I was not allowed to watch much television. And as a result, I watch very little television now. But every night, Mark lays down on the sofa and turns on the TV. I would prefer that we listened to music or read books together, instead.

Mark complains that I only think about myself and says that I don't want to share time with him. This isn't true. I enjoy spending time with my husband, but I don't want to sit in front of the television all night. He just becomes lost in these very boring TV shows - and I don't want to join him. What should I do?
-- Fed Up in Philadelphia

[B]
Dear Fed Up,

It sounds like you may be a bit stuck up. But too much television viewing shouldn't be encouraged, either. Mark wants you to enjoy watching television with him because it makes him feel closer to you. You don't have to, of course. But it may help, to make an effort.

There are lots of excellent TV shows on, now-a-days. Try finding one that you can enjoy with Mark - or at least stand. Watch the show together and then discuss it afterward. He'll think that you're sharing one of his interests and may talk to you more often. You might even discover a program that you both really like. Marriage is about working together, and this is your chance to demonstrate that you can.

Q1. What is "Fed Up's" complaint?

A. She wasn't allowed to watch much television as a child.

B. Her husband doesn't leave her much room on the sofa.

C. She thinks that "Mark" watches far too much television.

A. Discover another husband

Anne Banders' Advice -- Tiring Children
[A]
Dear Anne,

At the age of 40, I'm finally going to graduate university with a long-awaited Ph.D. in business. To celebrate, I'm going to throw a party for myself, and have asked my family to attend. I would like my two sisters and several friends to come along.

My husband and I have never been able to have children. As a result, we've formed close relationships with other couples who - whether by choice or circumstance - are like us. My sisters, however, all have young children aged 10 or less. They insist that their children be invited to my party, too.

Anne, I won't be able to stand it. I love my sisters' children. But I know that, at some point, they will get tired, bored, and begin to cry. Then their parents will have to take them home. I would like to have a grown-up party, with music and mixed drinks, late into the night. I don't want to have to worry about the children, and whether they're being entertained. Is that asking too much?
-- Graduating in Galveston

[B]
Dear Graduating,

No, not at all. Adults are entitled to have parties without children around. Good, responsible parents know that children do not belong at parties where mixed drinks are served, and celebrations continue late into the evening. Tell your sisters that the party is adult-only but that you would still love them to come. If they refuse to attend, then so be it.

Q1. What is "Graduating" concerned about?

A. Her and her husband's younger children

B. Making all the guests stand, at her party

C. Graduating university with a 4.0 average

D. Children taking the fun out of her party

正解 D

Q2. Why is Graduating having a party for herself?

A. She's getting a degree that she's long wanted.

B. She's finally having her fortieth birthday.

C. To celebrate her close relationships with others.

D. So that her two sisters can bring their children.

正解 A

Q3. What is Anne's advice to "Graduating"?

A. Tell her sisters to serve mixed drinks

B. Tell her sisters the party isn't for children

C. Tell her sisters that they're good parents

D. Tell her sisters the children are invited

正解 B

Q4. What does Anne say "Graduating" should do if her sisters insist on bringing children?

A. Have her party late into the night.

B. Children don't belong at adult parties.

C. Be a responsible parent.

D. Have her party without them.

正解 D

But I'm sure you understand that my family is very important to me as I'm sure yours is to you.

I hope this holiday can be approved as I wish to book a flight home tomorrow. Please consider my request. And again, I apologise for the short notice and any inconvenience this may cause.

Some Tips for Smart Paper Use

Change the way you format
One of the easiest ways to use less paper is to make a few simple alterations to your formatting habits on your PC. Use the smallest legible font size - try 9 point - when creating and designing documents, and avoid large headlines and wide margins whenever possible.

Change the way you print and copy
When you approach your copier or set up a print job on your computer, keep reduction in mind. Copy on both sides of the paper, program your copy machine to turn single-sided originals into double-sided copies.

Find paperless ways to communicate
Using email or voicemail to communicate with your co-workers and clients can save valuable resources and is often faster than traditional paper methods of correspondence. Instead of distributing paper copies of a memo, send it around via email.

Recycle...when it's time
Making errors while printing or copying is going to happen, but you don't have to let those "mistakes" go to waste. Instead of automatically throwing away the cast-off paper, save it for scrap paper or use the reverse side for printing draft copies.

Q1. According to George's memo, what does he want his office members to do?

From: Otaku15@playtoomuch.com

Subject: Can I borrow yours?

Hey Nerdy,
Help! Something terrible has happened to my computer! The other day, I noticed smoke coming out of my PC 7000 tower, and everything suddenly came to a halt. Then I opened the case and found that my CPU fan was completely blocked off with dust. The circuits weren't getting any cooling air!

Now I can't play "Bang-Bang" until I buy a new motherboard and video card. I'm even having to write this e-mail on my sister's computer. So, can I come over to your house and play "Bang-Bang" on your computer until I get my own fixed? I was almost up to the next level when my computer broke down! I can come by tomorrow after school. Say, at around five o'clock?

To Whom it May Concern:

I saw your brochure and am interested in taking your Arctic Circle tour next summer. I have a few questions, however, before I reserve a spot in the tour.

First of all, how extreme are the temperatures, and what are the chances of getting snowed in and not returning home as scheduled? Second, if an accident should happen during the tour, will we receive medical care adequately or be flown to a hospital in a reasonable amount of time? Finally, what kind of physical condition is required for attempting this adventure? How much walking, lifting, or climbing will we be doing while in the arctic?

Looking forward to your response.

Molly Brown

Dear Ms. Brown:

Thank you for contacting us. Our tours to the Arctic Circle are very popular these days. Allow me to answer your questions as best I can.

First, the weather in the arctic during the summer is mild to a surprising extent. The winds are fairly calm, and we do not expect any snow at all. The average daytime temperature is 10 degrees F, and it gets down to below 3 degrees at night.

Secondly, our guides are all qualified Emergency Medical Service professionals. However, should serious medical procedures be required, we would fly you out by helicopter to the nearest base hospital.

Finally, we do expect participants to be able to carry at least 15 kg in their packs. And, you should be fit enough to keep up with the daily 4-hour boating trips.

We look forward to taking an adventure with you!

The City of Kyoto

To truly understand Japan, the visitor from abroad must spend time in the back streets and suburbs of this old capital, where scores of the country's famous structures are maintained within a lively modern city. Kyoto's citizens may wish for the economic vitality of Tokyo and nearby Osaka, but they take great pride in their refined food, their own way of speaking, and their special sensitivity to the four seasons.
Founded in 794 as Heian-kyo (Heian capital), the city was modeled on the Tang Chinese city of Chang-an. Bordered on three sides by mountains and divided by a river flowing north to south, the city was considered ideal by Emperor Kanmu (the emperor of this period).
As the population grew, cleanliness became a problem, especially when the main Kamo River flooded. A series of ceremonies and festivals developed to please the "spirits" responsible for widespread sicknesses and other naturally occurring problems, resulting in a tight-knit fabric of ceremonies and customs, most of which are still observed today.

[B]

Conversation between Tour Guide and tourists from the United States

Tour Guide: Well, this ends my presentation on Kyoto's history and the origins of its culture. Are there any questions?
Tourist: You mentioned Emperor Kanmu's ideals. Were they tied to the Chinese idea of "Feng Sui"?
Tour Guide: Yes, that's right. Emperor Kanmu was much influenced by the idea of "Feng Sui" and he promoted the development of the city following these ideas.
Tourist: You mentioned Kyoto's own way of speaking.
What characteristics does it have?
Tour Guide: Well, it's a little bit hard to explain, but it clearly differs from what you might hear in the Tokyo area.
Tourist: What are the characteristics of the cooking of Kyoto?
Tour Guide: Well, it's delicate and the seasoning is much lighter than that of Tokyo.
Tourist: What kind of ceremonies and festivals can we see in today's Kyoto?
Tour Guide: You can see the Gion Festival in August and the Aoi Festival in May every year.
